What is early interceptive orthodontics?

Early interceptive orthodontics, sometimes called Phase 1 treatment, focuses on guiding a child’s dental and jaw development while they are still growing. This type of treatment is typically recommended for children around age seven or older, once permanent teeth begin to emerge.

At Liberty Station Orthodontics, early treatment is used selectively and intentionally—not every child needs it. When appropriate, early interceptive care can help create space for incoming teeth, improve bite alignment, and reduce the need for more extensive treatment later. Our goal is to intervene only when it truly benefits the child’s long-term oral health.

The benefits of early interceptive orthodontics

Early interceptive orthodontics allows us to address developing issues at the right time, setting the foundation for a healthier, more balanced smile.

Guides jaw and tooth development

Early treatment can help direct proper jaw growth and tooth eruption while a child is still developing.

Reduces future treatment complexity

Addressing concerns early may shorten or simplify orthodontic treatment during the teen years.

Supports long-term oral health

Proper alignment early on can improve bite function and help protect teeth as a child grows.

Our early interceptive orthodontic treatments

Invisalign First

Invisalign First is designed specifically for growing smiles, using clear aligners to guide early tooth development and address orthodontic concerns during Phase 1 treatment. This option can help create space for incoming permanent teeth while improving alignment and bite function. At Liberty Station Orthodontics, Invisalign First is planned carefully based on growth and development, and recommended only when it’s an appropriate fit for the child.

Invisalign palatal expander

The Invisalign palatal expander offers a modern alternative to traditional expanders, using removable aligners to gently widen the upper jaw. Because it’s designed with comfort and convenience in mind, this option can be easier for some children to adjust to during Phase 1 treatment. Our orthodontists evaluate jaw growth, timing, and individual needs to determine whether an Invisalign expander is the right option for guiding healthy development.

Space Maintenance

Space maintenance is used when a child loses a baby tooth early and needs help preserving room for the permanent tooth to come in properly. By maintaining space during growth, we can help prevent crowding and misalignment later on. At Liberty Station Orthodontics, space maintainers are recommended selectively and monitored closely as development continues. This conservative approach helps protect future tooth eruption without unnecessary intervention.

Palatal expansion

Palatal expansion is used to gently widen the upper jaw when it is too narrow, helping improve bite alignment and create space for permanent teeth. Because the jaw is still growing in younger patients, expansion can be done more efficiently and comfortably during Phase 1 treatment. Our orthodontists carefully evaluate timing and growth patterns before recommending expansion, ensuring it’s used only when it provides a clear benefit.

Limited braces

In some cases, limited braces or partial orthodontic treatment may be used during Phase 1 to guide tooth positioning or address specific concerns. This approach focuses on targeted corrections rather than full orthodontic treatment. At Liberty Station Orthodontics, limited braces are planned with long-term development in mind and may reduce the complexity of future treatment.

The phase one process

01

Initial orthodontic evaluation

Your child’s visit includes a complimentary consultation, digital scans, photos, and any necessary X-rays. We assess growth, tooth development, and bite alignment to determine whether early treatment is needed.

02

Personalized treatment planning

If early interceptive treatment is recommended, Dr. Upatham or Dr. Wong designs a plan based on your child’s clinical needs and stage of development. We take time to explain the reasoning behind treatment and answer questions.

03

Monitoring growth and progress

During and after Phase 1 treatment, we continue to monitor growth as permanent teeth come in. Some children may later transition into Phase 2 treatment, while others may simply continue with observation.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation around age seven. This doesn’t always mean treatment is needed, but it allows us to monitor development and timing.

Does every child need early interceptive orthodontics?

No. Many children do not need early treatment. At Liberty Station Orthodontics, we recommend Phase 1 care only when it provides a clear benefit to long-term oral health.

Will my child still need braces later?

Some children may need a second phase of treatment once all permanent teeth are in, while others may not. Early treatment can often reduce the complexity or length of future orthodontic care.
