What is an orthodontic emergency?

An orthodontic emergency usually involves discomfort or a broken appliance rather than a true medical emergency. Common issues include poking wires, loose brackets, or damaged appliances that cause irritation or interfere with treatment.

At Liberty Station Orthodontics, orthodontic emergency care is intended for current patients who need help between regular visits. We focus on relieving discomfort, protecting your treatment progress, and determining whether an in-office visit is needed. Our goal is to make the situation feel manageable and get you back to feeling comfortable as quickly as possible.e.

Common orthodontic emergencies

Loose or broken brackets

Brackets can sometimes loosen due to hard or sticky foods or accidental impact. If a bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, it’s often okay to leave it in place until we advise next steps. If it’s causing discomfort, our team can guide you on how to manage it and determine whether you should come in for a repair.

Poking or broken wires

Wires may shift or break and begin to poke the cheek or gums, causing irritation. Using orthodontic wax or gently repositioning the wire can often provide temporary relief. If discomfort continues, contact our office so we can help determine the best solution.

Lost or broken appliances

Expanders, space maintainers, or other appliances can occasionally break or come loose. If this happens, it’s important to let us know so we can assess whether the appliance needs to be adjusted or replaced to keep treatment on track.

What to do in an orthodontic emergency

01

Check the issue and stay calm

Take a look at what’s causing the discomfort and note when it started. Many issues are minor and easier to manage than they may initially seem.

02

Use temporary solutions if needed

Orthodontic wax, saltwater rinses, or careful repositioning can often reduce irritation until we advise next steps.

03

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Is an orthodontic emergency the same as a dental emergency?

No. Orthodontic emergencies typically involve discomfort or appliance issues, not severe pain, swelling, or trauma. For serious dental injuries or pain, contact your general dentist or an emergency dental provider.

Do you offer after-hours or weekend emergency appointments?

If you experience a true orthodontic emergency or severe discomfort after hours, please call our office and follow the instructions provided. A member of our team will assist you and help determine the next best step, including whether an in-office visit is needed.

Can I wait until my next appointment?

In many cases, yes. However, if something is causing ongoing discomfort or could affect treatment progress, it’s best to call us so we can advise you properly.
